Zwinkern

Originaltext in Spanisch:

QUESTION DE NUMEROS

Chris Sawyer is one of those artists that the public hardly knows and yet out of his hand have been some of the world's most innovative titles of the strategy, in recent years. His usual reluctance to grant interviews could be overcome, this time by Micromanía that Sawyer got access to a few weeks ago.

We interviewed the creator of the most attractive strategy games, fun and innovative recently, Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon.

Whenever the word "Tycoon" appears in a game of strategy, it is almost inevitable to think of Sid Meier and Railroad Tycoon, which in any case not only does not seem to matter to Chris Sawyer. It comes to flattering, according to his words. "Railroad Tycoon was an excellent game, and probably much better technically than any of mine. Just hope Sid does not care who mistakenly attribute their authorship to any of my games."

IDEAS
It's easy to assume that to create a title as the creator of RollerCoaster Tycoon requires an analytical mind the enormous detail of each section. The thoroughness and accuracy strategy of small objects is simply amazing. But according to Chris, "the analytical part of my games is often a secondary consideration. Both Transport Tycoon RollerCoaster Tycoon like, my main concern was a design that revolved around the aspect of fun (basically, building things and see how they work), rather than focus on data such as financial or overall management of thousands of parameters. purely analytical part in designing a game is a challenge of the fat, and I honestly do not think any of my games stand out especially in this paragraph, but luckily the funny side always has outpaced all other considerations."

A MAN AND HIS GAMES
The general perception in the industry today, is that it is impossible for a single programmer is able to develop a complete game. So, despite a slight help and collaboration, how Chris Sawyer has been able to carry out their work? "Strictly is not who has worked with a team, although I may say so, as Simon Foster has worked in the graphics of my game for so long that he can be considered as part of my team. However usually work alone, and very rarely is usually someone else involved in the development of some of my work. The only help I get from external equipment is for very specific tasks and not too complicated or that form the bulk of the game. I have no time or desire to involved in the programming of certain low-level routines in Windows, so that part I leave in the hands of the guys from Fish (Joe Booth and Nick Tuckett). The amount of code in this section is used in the game is quite small but much more practical than experts in the field deal with this, before going mad with tasks for which I'm not really prepared."

One of the most original titles, innovative and of the whole past year was RollerCoaster Tycoon, creating original and inimitable Chris Sawyer. His previous production, Transport Tycoon, was also considered at the time by critics and genre fans as one of the best market strategy titles. But who is Chris Sawyer? We have read many things about people like Peter Molyneux, the Bitmap Brothers, David Braben (one of the "heroes" Chris, of course), etc., Which tend to come into contact with the media constantly, but Chris Sawyer is those typical "inmates" of the industry than just give interviews, and is largely unknown among the general public. He lives in Scotland, on a small farm, and hates all the "famous" in the industry, although it is a real crazy game. It's a lovely guy, very polite and spends most of his time doing that he likes, creating computer games. It is one of the, and very few, programmers whose work can be considered truly created. From start to finish, is ultimately responsible for all development, but for his latest production was assisted by a small team, Fish, who helped with the construction of routines and graphic design part of the game, although virtually everything that can be seen on our screens is really a creation of Chris Sawyer.

TOUCHING A NERVE
Previous research that Chris performed before boarding the creation of their games is one of the main tasks of development, as he takes care to explain. "The bulk of the information comes from books and personal visits to amusement parks to discover the peculiarities of the operation of a roller coaster. When the game was already well advanced, I got in touch with John Wardley, who was responsible design and construction of some roller coasters and other attractions throughout Europe, so their experience and advice was invaluable in the project. But the truth is that I never get to go as far as I want in my work research and information gathering. I wish I could visit many more theme parks but, in short, had no time (...). I had to gather all information possible from the technological point of view on the operation of such attractions, hand held responsible for the different parks, which perhaps was the best system since, in this mode, the game was based on a single point of view (...). As for realism, I was always clear that the game should have a visual look closer to cartoon or comics, as any other style, but so that, at the same time, trains, structures and attractions in an overall sense, should be recognizable as realistic and feasible. do not think a game, let alone one as RollerCoaster Tycoon, is to be based on a photo-realistic visual style."

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
Many times we may ask what is the "magic formula", or combination of ingredients that must be taken in a game for it to succeed or the classic category. For Chris, combine factors such as passion for creating games and some inspiration, but when asked about the specific case of RollerCoaster Tycoon and other works, his response was that "all due to the combination of three sections. First, the game is to "build" things, which people would normally be attractive. Second, the size reached in the game and get the atmosphere trap the player and create an immersive environment. It makes you want to take care of their "babies", recently designed and built by him or her, watching the park, cleaning, doing everything works as it should and ensuring that the "people" are happy to visit you. And third, it's an amusement park . This type of places, including roller coasters, always involve people having fun and enjoying themselves, and with the current scenario of computer games, globally, in which a large percentage is based on violent behavior and kill all of creatures, the user is something that offers a radically different proposal. Something whose main objective is to do things for others - whether they are virtual people - have fun. So the user satisfaction and fun looking through a system is to satisfy others. My own love for roller coasters was the starting point for the development of the game. I took parle the original code used for what was to be a continuation of Transport Tycoon, and modified it to build simple roller coasters. Of course, during the course of the game, it was constantly changing, but that's how it all began."
"We must try to be very careful when working the small details in a game like RollerCoaster Tycoon, because it'll hurt things like the speed and management of all parameters, as you add things. For example, the game can handle a maximum of four thousand individual characters, swarming the park, while each has its own feelings and thoughts about how well that what is happening, whether or not you like what you see, etc.. and if not careful with details, is finished with a game that runs slower than a turtle and, of course, is not no fun. The trick is to add things and touch that which is obtained most striking result , without affecting the speed of play. I like working, in this sense, from the point of view of programming that the design. My mode of working is based on an intelligent and careful programming, and in a proper management and accurate data, then add everything that has to do with the design and gameplay, instead of working on the designs and then set everything in a fit of creativity."

THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY
Paragraph technology is something we should ask Chris. Most of their games machines require an average potential, and even lower. So, what importance they have for Chris Sawyer peripheral devices such as 3D design a game? "I hate to follow trends using every technological advances that appear on the market, especially in regard to 3D cards." Chris says. "I like to develop the games I want and I like to me, and hardware technology used only where strictly necessary. I do not like to take and use the technological forefront of the market to adjust to it after the needs of a game. Addition I know it's a business strategy that works very well to design games that work on machines that are not very powerful. If you are a design a game that necessarily need the latest 3D card on the market and the latest Pentium III available, you're giving Instantly 95% of the potential market."

Usually reluctant to give interviews to the press, Chris Sawyer lives "imprisoned" in his farm devoted to the creation of video games, controlling all sections from beginning to end, almost artisanal work.

QUESTION OF NUMBERS
Chris holds a BS in Computer and Microprocessor Systems, which also includes a thorough knowledge of mathematics. Nearly all titles have a solid mathematical background and working his usual style is to address problems related to fundamental calculation. He firmly believes that it is much more practical to find mathematical solutions when it comes to trying different alternatives, and designing specific algorithms for specific problems that can be found for what is developing.

GENDER
"Theme Park in many ways was a very good game, but in some ways it was very disappointing. It is one of those games I bought, but I was only playing just over half an hour, and I have not come to play ever since. I trying to see how far you can go with Theme Park World, and if Bullfrog has achieved everything I wanted. If so, I'm sure will become one of my favorites, but I hope they have solved all the problems I had the original."

STOCK EXCHANGE AND ACTIONS
"Going to the stock exchange, right? Hmmm ... It's something I've been considering more than once, but need to learn a lot of things that do not know the subject right now, and something that I would not take lightly . not know if I finally decide to do it but, if so, should stop making games, not that I feel like much, really."

THE PAST
Sawyer's resume is impressive, not only for his latest work. For a little over five years, between 1988 and 1993, was commissioned to conduct the PC versions of a number of titles Amiga, including games like Elite Plus, Frontier Elite 2, Dino Dini's Goal, Conqueror, Campaign, Virus, StarRay, Xenomorph and Birds of Prey.

THE FUTURE
"RollerCoaster 2? Transport Tycoon 2? Is something that could take me seriously in a few years. But for now, I see RollerCoaster Tycoon and expansion CD's available as a final and definitive version of the game, in the taking into account the technical possibilities of the PC today. Greater processing power and enhanced hardware can offer new possibilities for some then I do not want to close the door to a new version. However I had to abandon two Sometimes my intention to develop a new release of Transport Tycoon, which does not mean you can not try a third."

PROFESSIONALISM
"I love being a designer and programmer simultaneously, and do not think I could devote only one of these facets. Programming often has a great influence on the design and vice versa, and I think that I can do both tasks to obtain more easily the results I want."

FUN
"My hobbies include watching car racing, pool tournaments and tennis matches, and I like to play table tennis, badminton and billiards. I've never been fond of things like football and rugby, although it seems contradictory, it I liked too many computer games, as a user, although I recognize that some like Colin McRae and Geoff Crammond's Formula 1 Grand Prix (the original) I've been hooked for real."
